Scabiosa Flower Harvest. 26022019 Scabiosa Butterfly Blue a long flowering perennial scabious producing huge numbers of purple-blue pincushion-like flowers from July to September. Remove and collect seeds.
Pincushion flowers will bloom from spring until frost but the heaviest bloom occurs in May. Cut when blooms are almost fully open. Harvest when seed heads are light green with dark-bronze edges and the star-shaped centers are just turning black.
If collecting scabiosa echinacea heliopsis or a favorite marigold or African daisy it is best to wait until the seeds are fully ripe before collecting.
Flowers almost fully open. If you have to tug the seeds off the head of a plant in the daisy family they may not be ripe enough to grow. In ideal growing conditions your scabiosa plants will act as short-lived hardy perennials in zones 5 through 9. Scabiosa plants may need staking to keep them upright so that the stems do not twist.
