Poinsettia Flower Watering. Keep the soil moist but never soggy. Poinsettia flowers are actually made up of the bracts which look like petals and the tiny yellow flowers in the center called cyathia.
Never allow the pot to stand in water. During the holidays while in full bloom they typically enjoy semi-cool humid locations in bright indirect light with plenty of moisture. Poinsettias change color in response to shorter winter days.
Anyone who gingerly tries to water the plant with the pot sitting in its tray or dish on the living room end table will know that it is almost impossible to give the plant a thorough watering when you are more worried about spilling onto the furniture or getting the water into the pot evenly.
For example in the south the plants may not need to be watered more than every two weeks. Water when the soil dries about one-half its depth. Remove the decorative foil from your plant or poke holes in it promptly so your plant gets proper drainage when watering your poinsettia. Repeat as frequently as needed allowing the soil to dry to the touch between waterings.
