I didnt learn of this until later in the growing season this year so I bought some seeds and started some. USDA pamphlets in 1940 and 1963 listed four oclock as lightly fed by Japanese beetles but did not mention any toxic effects to the pests.

Japanese beetles love to dine on four oclocks and according to several university sources these plants are poisonous to them. In colder climates you have to dig up the tubers and bring them in for the winter. I didnt learn of this until later in the growing season this year so I bought some seeds and started some. Four oclocks are grown as annuals in Minnesota.
